Newcastle Brown Ale

Newcastle Brown AleIn keeping with the recent trend to review more mainstream brews here’s my take on the Newcastle Brown Ale. Drinking this takes me back to Thursday nights at Ham’s when me and the guys would drink ourselves silly on this delicious brew. In most bars this is considered a high dollar beer, typically running no less than $4/glass. That being said we thought we had died and gone to heaven on $1 pint night. Good beer and beautiful ladies makes for a great evening in the town of Chapel Hill. I am quite certain anyone that has has the pleasure of drinking this beer has similar stories of food, fun and fellowship and here at sevenpack we invite you to share them with us.

This beer doesn’t resemble the style as it pours a deep ruby color rather than brown which is what you would expect. It has a sweet metallic aroma that is noticable long before your nose is near the glass. The taste lacks the rich malty mouthfeel I have found in other brown ales but I guess that is because the English do things a little differently. Also, it is surprisingly sweet for a brown ale with only hints of nuts and carmel which are usually a defining characteristic of this genre. Despite all of this, the New Castle Brown Ale is quite refreshing and enjoyable and at 4.7% abv if you aren’t careful you find yourself a little on the drunk side before you know it. It is also sits light in the stomach and warms the esopahgus on the way down. I doubt I have to recommend this beer to anyone because I am certain you have all had it, rather I will suggest you continue to buy a six-pack whenever you are buying your groceries and/or asking your local bartenender to pour you a glass when you are out with your friends at your favorite pub.
