Blue Point Toasted Lager
Number 2 this evening comes from Blue Point brewing company in Long Island. I had a hard time choosing this second sixer, but ended up going with this due to the fact that it recently won a Gold Medal at the World Beer Cup. My impressions after drinking it are, “Eh – it’s good, but gold medal might be taking it a bit far.”
The pour of this is a very clear and dark golden-brown. It’s quite a beautiful beer with very little head. There isn’t much aroma to this beer. It is just a bit malty, and there is a tiny bit of hop. But, really, this is a very unexciting beer for the nose. In the mouth, this beer impresses us with considerably more action. The first sensation you get from this beer is a light hop burn. After this, we get a metallic sweetness blended with a bitter hop flavor. This, unfortunately, isn’t the great floral aromatic hop that I love, but it isn’t bad, either. The aftertaste stays a bit metallic and offers a slight caramel taste. In the end, this is essentially an amber blended with just a hint of IPA. As I said, it’s a pretty good beer, and probably a beer you’d be lauded for bringing to a social gathering. But, it’s nothing to write home about.

Blue Point Brewing Company Blueberry Ale
This brew is part of my attempt to connect to my new homeland. Blue Point Brewing Boys are located out in Patchogue, Long Island. Lacking sufficient geographic understanding of Long Island I can only assume that Patchogue is due east of Brooklyn, and since we’re talking about an island, I can only assume that Patchogue can’t be too far.
I have to say that I wasn’t really sure what to expect out of this bottle. Blueberries are, in fact, delicious. So is beer. The combination of the two, though, seems like it might fall short of the potential combined deliciousness of blueberries and beer. It also seems like it could blow my mind and I would leave this tasting a changed man.
It pours a creamy amber with a cottony head. I think I see a slight bluish hue hidden in the amber, but my mind could just be playing blueberry tricks on me. There is the presence of blueberries in the aroma. It’s subtle, even delicate, but definitely blueberry. Luckily, the blueberries don’t overpower the palate. Unluckily, nothing about this ale overpowers the palate. It’s kinda sweet, kinda blueberry-y, kinda creamy, kinda ale-ish. It’s pleasant, but that’s pretty much the extent of it. My socks are happy enough while drinking this, but my socks aren’t rocked and that’s what my socks want.
While this ale is nice, I confess it will not be a regular visit for me. It seems a little too gimmicky to be part of my regular rotation. I’m actually wondering what to do with the four remaining bottles out of this six pack. The main course for tonight’s tasting is popcorn and a movie. Blueberry Ale isn’t a great partner for buttered popcorn, but it does go great with Natalie Portman and her shaved head in V for Vendetta. Probably, though, tepid cat piss would be like heaven to my lips while ogling Nat. She’s hot.
