It’s another late holiday beer review! Again, this Scaldis just showed up on NC shelves recently, so I really have no choice but to review it late.
This beer actually pours quite light. It’s cloudy and obviously unfiltered, but otherwise a nice amber color. The aroma here exhibits considerable toffee, but with the welcome addition of several spices and a light licorice hint. In the mouth, the taste is consistent with the aroma – toffee with winter spices and some hints of anise. The thing that sets this apart from other, somewhat similar, beers is that Scaldis tossed in enough spice to give the beer a good kick – nice for warming me up on a cold winter night. Honestly, I wouldn’t consider this a transcendent beer in the winter beer arena. And, furthermore, it’s a pretty poor bargain in the field at around $4 for 25cl – even at 12% abv, that ain’t great. However, it is a nice variation of a Belgian abbey ale that is different enough to be considered a holiday beer. If you’re at a beer bar and want to show off your worldly beer knowledge, this’ll be a good beer to order. But, if you’re either a patriot or a penny-pincher, there are better Christmas beers available stateside.
