Karl Strauss Amber Lager

Karl Strauss AmberFew things go better with a delayed flight than a bigass glass of beer. Luckily, LAX has a few different offerings on tap that offer a much needed diversion from Airport Sam Adams and Airport Bass. Enter the Karl Strauss.

I should start by saying how well this lager goes with Chili Cheese Fries at 11am, and how my dedication to healthy living knows no bounds.

There is a nice hoppy bitterness to the Amber Lager that balances nicely with the sweet malts. This actually hits the palate a little soft, but then develops quickly into a bitey, caramel-y lager. I assume this would also be an enjoyable beverage without the cheese fries, but someone should double check me on that. Cheers.

Karl Strauss Stargazer IPA

Karl Strauss Stargazer IPADamned delayed flights. If there is a silver lining to the cloud of jet-lagged despair that awaits me back on the East Coast, it’s that I have some time to sit in LAX, watch SportsCenter shoulder to shoulder with dudes talking into their Bluetooth headsets, and try some really expensive beer that I haven’t had before.

The Stargazer is lighter and more citrus-y than I expected. It pours almost golden and has a sweet, musty, hoppy aroma. The mouthfeel is full and tingly and tastes of oranges and Brussels sprouts (which isn’t so bad, really – there’s kind of a bitter earthiness below the heavy citrus flavor). This IPA is exceedingly drinkable and enjoyable. Perhaps my bitterness towards Continental and Air Traffic Control has just been projected into this glass, so someone should double check me on this, too. Cheers.
