Schlafly Hefeweizen

SchlaflyAnother summer day, another hefeweizen. This is another such brewery that doesn’t currently see distribution down in NC. So, when I was recently in Kentucky, I deemed appropriate to pick up a 6-pack to enjoy alongside another 6-pack of a similar variety (see tomorrow’s review). This one jumped out at me due to it’s label art that rather appealed to my classical senses – it’s nice and spartan and hearkens back to a simpler time!

This beer pours, as hefeweizens do, a cloudy golden color. The aroma actually isn’t as citrusy as I would expect, but rather smells quite soapy. Occasionally I can find such an aroma to be pleasant in a beer, but, in this case, it’s a bit overwhelming and isn’t doing much for me. So, let’s hope it redeems itself with flavor… There is actually quite a citrus burn from this on the tongue, but only a muted lemon flavor. Rather, this quickly traverses the tongue with a flavor that is quite metallic and more than a little like paper. There is just a mild lemon taste here, and a hint of sweetness right in the aftertaste, but it really doesn’t do much to battle the less pleasant flavors involved. Sadly, I’m going to say that this is one of the worse hefeweizens that I’ve tasted recently, pleasant marketing aside…
