Wild Goose Oatmeal Stout

Last but not least in this month’s BOMC batch, the Wild Goose Oatmeal Stout.  Before getting into the review I feel I should do a little PSA for those of you that have trouble buying gifts for Christmas or for those of you who have ever been accused of being bad gift-givers.  The BOMC is a quality gift that keeps on giving all year round.  If you’ve got some extra time on your hands search through our old reviews.  You’ll be hard pressed to find more than a couple, if any, disappointing write-ups.  The selection is well above average and it’s really nice to get a box of beer every month – trust me, they’ll love it.

Anyway, The other offerings this month were a bit gimmicky but this beer would appear to be devoid of surprise and wonder.  It is dark as night, black as motor oil, a veritable black hole of liquid.  It has the typical stout hue accompanied some glorious, fluffy, caramel head.  Rich dark-roast coffee travels deep into the nasal cavity as a crisp coolness follows and then wraps around to the top of the palate.  There are subtle chocolate notes that pop in and out like the mole from the “wack the mole” game.  The taste is thinner than I expected but the flavor is still there.  Dark chocolate grabs the sides of the tongue while the coffee characteristics sprint to the back of the throat.  The chocolate adds a soft, savory flavor while the roasted coffee grabs the drinker’s attention.  A metallic twinge rounds out the final bit of flavor as a smokey, liquid coating slides down the throat.  This beer is very bold and flavorful given the meager 6% abv – meager compared to the stouts I’m used to (I tend to reach for the imperial variety).  I’ve really enjoyed this beer and, given its balance and drinkability, it might even be sessionable during the cold winter months.  Very nice!
