Sherwood Forest Sheriff’s IPA
This here’s another review of a beer sent to us by the nice folks at the Beer of the Month Club. This one I am, admittedly, skeptical of. You guys know how I can put a lot of stock in label art and, frankly, this one suffers. First of all, it’s called Sherwood Forest Sheriff’s IPA and, secondly, it has a picture of a woodland sheriff in a forest setting on the front. I dunno, maybe it’s just me, but it seems a bit hokey. But, let’s not get too carried away – we’ll let the beer do the talking.
This beer pours a very dense and deep golden color with noticeable debris. The aroma is heavier on the malt than on the hop, as far as I can tell – lots of heavy bready flavors. In the mouth, the bready theme continues. Don’t get me wrong, there are noticeable hops here – they are mostly floral and not overwhelmingly bitter. However, there is also a ton of malt. This tastes like a big biscuit bomb with just a hint of hop added in to even us out. Interestingly, while we don’t get a lot of hop through the mouth, the aftertaste wreaks of hop – it’s like a little hop bomb that you put in your mouth and it doesn’t quite explode until the back of the throat where it leaves you with a big floral bouquet for seconds after the beer is gone. Honestly, this one took me by surprise at first – I didn’t really like it. However, after an extended session with it, I think it has a lot of interesting qualities. Don’t buy this because you want an in-your-face hoppy IPA experience. However, if you’re interested in richer varieties of IPA with lots of malt, then this may suit you just fine. Again, the bottle art is lost on me, but give this a go if the description sounds worthwhile to you!
