Nutfield “Old Man” Ale

Nutfield Old Man AleWell, lookee here! It seems that an offering from the latest batch from Beer of the Month Club managed to slip through the cracks, and I just unearthed it sitting in a hidden corner of the beer fridge. This error must not go uncorrected, and so I intend to review this beer immediately!

This beer is apparently an American Pale Ale, and it looks the part. It’s relatively clear and a medium golden color. The aroma displays some mild hop with a touch of malt and a sourness that is slightly biting on the nostrils. The taste of this is pleasant, but wilder than most pale ales. There is a sharp carbonation bite on the tip of the tongue that moves into a light hop flavor. On through the mouth, we sense a bready malt that follows to the back of the mouth and sits on the aftertaste. What I didn’t tell you, though, is that there is this wild sourness that intercedes into each of these flavors. It’s not necessarily a lambic-style wildness, but it IS sour in the same vein. It gives this beer a quirky kick that some folks might not like, but it isn’t entirely unpleasant, and it actually makes the beer a bit more thirst-quenching than it might otherwise be. This certainly isn’t a typical pale ale, but it is worth drinking. Honestly, “Old Man” ale isn’t an inappropriate name for this beer – like many old fellas, this beer is quirky and often disagreeable but, once you understand it, it begins to grow on you.
