Fordham Tavern Ale

I gotta be honest with you. I bought a six-pack of the Fordham Tavern Ale, and this is my 5th out of the six-pack, and I can’t come to a consistent decision about it. Thus far, my opinions have ranged from lukewarm to pretty positive. So, I can’t say anything ‘bad’ about the beer, per se. But, I also can’t find a way to give it a stellar review. Anyway, I’ve got one in front of me now, so let’s see what I’m feeling…

This beer pours a rather clear ruby red color with a thin off-white head. The aroma here is actually pretty nice – mildly malty with some sweet spice and no abrasion whatsoever, just very smooth. In the mouth, there is a bit of sweetness on the tip of the tongue, but the texture of the beer is all-too-watery and just doesn’t seem substantial. As the beer traverses the tongue, a stronger malty presence develops – it’s a little dusty, a bit rich, with just hints of horehound candy. As the beer gets into aftertaste mode, there is a slight off taste that has a metallic sour tint to it that I don’t like too much – but, it isn’t terrible, probably just a symptom of the hop profile. So, all in all, it isn’t a simple beer. It has a complexity of flavor that evolves through the mouth. However, none of those flavors really blow my hair back. I suppose I’m impressed by the journey of the beer through the mouth, but I don’t necessarily agree with all of the pit-stops. In short, this isn’t a bad beer, but it’s not a beer I’ll likely buy again. I’ll have a hard time recommending this beer strongly, but I seriously doubt you’ll really dislike it. How’s that for lukewarm?
