Murphy’s Irish Stout
Next up for the March Madness Irish Beer-a-Thon is another widely known Irish brew – Murphy’s Irish Stout.
The pour of the Murphy’s is very similar to the Guinness – dark and viscous. The head is a bit different, though – The head is a slightly more of a malty cream color and is rockier while still retaining quite well. The flavor is different than the Guinness, but it is a very subtle difference. I can’t quite pick out the flavor, but it seems to hit the sides of the mouth as the beer travels down the throat. It’s almost a spiciness, with a slight metallic twinge. That is a pretty misleading description, though, so you might want to disregard it. Nevertheless, there is a difference – it has a more grandiose presence in the mouth and has more personality than the Guinness, in my opinion. -Ben
This was my first time tasting the Murphy’s Irish Stout and I enjoyed it. It was quite similar to the Guinness, with a bit more aftertaste. It seemed that the flavors stayed in the mouth a good bit longer after drinking, whereas, with the Guinness the taste pretty much dissipated after drinking. While similar to the Guinness, the Murphy’s has some slight differences. There are subtle, smoky flavors to the beer and also, perhaps, some banana flavors that permeate the beer. Again, there is a lighter mouthfeel than I anticipated, but the beer overall was very good. I would rate it about even with the Guinness. -Jon
