In the spirit of the season I’ve decided to try Blue Moon’s Pumpkin Ale. Until I did a search I didn’t realize Blue Moon was brewed by Coors Brewing Co. It was quite a shock because I have been drinking Blue Moon’s original ale, the Belgian White, for quite some time. So, in case you didn’t know either, you do now. Already, from the smell, I can tell this isn’t going to live up my expectations. In my opinion, a flavored beer should taste and smell like that of which it claims. But this beer has a sweet, malty lager-like aroma. I wanted to experience the pumpkin and spice with each breath but alas I was disappointed as it is hardly noticeable. It was my initial reaction that this brew has aspirations of an Oktoberfest instead of a pumpkin ale; however, the taste redeems its style, but only slightly. The liquid hits the tongue with very little flavor and then a pumpkin pie-like spiciness emerges. The taste rises and falls in the mouth and then disappears leaving a malty thickness that is again lacking in flavor. This seems to be a very simple brew that allows the drinker to capture its true essence for only a few seconds. When compared to other ales in its category, this is at best mediocre. Again I will have to reference the Shipyard Pumpkin Ale, which is delicious, and say that it’s this beer’s daddy on all accounts. If you are like me you will be drawn to this beer because of the packaging but I dare say the taste doesn’t live up to the appearance. If you must have a pumpkin ale and this is all that is available, go for it, but if you have another choice I feel you will be more pleased with something else.
